Huge shoutout to Head Varsity Baseball Coach Josh Tremblay as he was named Division 3 Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association for his work during the 2024 season. Coach Tremblay will be honored this weekend at the annual MHSBCA Coaches Convention in Mount Pleasant! This award is not only given to coaches that have successfully teams, but to those that represent the school, community, and the game in a positive, educational-based manner. The JV Girls Basketball Team traveled to Coloma on Thursday night. The Panthers defense was shining bright tonight with their pressure, forcing turnovers, and capitalizing in transition off Comet turnovers. The ladies opened the second half with a strong 3rd quarter outscoring the Comets 12-2. The Panthers left Coloma Victorious 26-20. They are back in action Tuesday Home against Kalamazoo Hackett. Today is National “It's OKAY to Quit Day.” If you have a bad habit, or negative practice that you would like to quit, please see Mrs. Adams for a sheet of paper. We are asking all students and staff to think about something you would like to quit to bring more happiness into 2025. Before break, Art I students wrapped up a three and a half week long painting project. The works they created are impressive and a reflection of their hard work and artistic growth.

CONGRATULATIONS to both Mrs. Sarah Brant and Mrs. Devon Girton who were notified today that they received individual grants for their classrooms. Mrs. Brant will use the grant to purchase a short lens for the camera for the yearbook class. Mrs. Girton will use the grant to purchase leisure reading books for the classroom. YOUR SENIOR DECEMBER 2024 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--ADRIAN FLORES! My favorite class as of right now, I would have to say is weightlifting. My favorite teachers are: Teacher/Coach Mr.Tremblay and Joe Isbrecht. A sport I wanted to do is football and a sport I participated in is wrestling. In my free time, I like to create art. I plan on enlisting in a branch particularly The Navy. I have enjoyed being a WHS Panther.

YOUR JUNIOR DECEMBER 2024 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--KENDAL KIEFER! The people in my family are very important to me. I live with my mom, dad, brother, and three four fur babies. My mom and dad are both very hardworking as well as my brother. My favorite class this year has been Ms. Irmen's Chemistry class because she is very easy to talk to and I feel she makes personal connections with her students which helps us trust her and learn from her more. Also her class is very fun and we do lots of experiments. My favorite teacher would have to be Coach Tremblay, he is a very good supporter and he is always there when I need to talk. He encourages me and pushes me to be the best version of myself. I play varsity softball and I have been since the end of my freshman year. I am a part of the Student Council. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, watching shows and movies, playing with my animals, and I like to work on hitting and fielding in softball. After High School I plan to go to Ferris State or Western Michigan to study criminology and I plan to move to a city after college and become a homicide detective. I am proud to be a Watervliet Panther because our school offers things that can help all of us in the future. I do dual enrollment, but there are many options such as Early Middle College, Dual Enrollment, and Vo Tech, and more. We also have many clubs and sports programs. Another reason I’m a proud panther is because of the family that we have in the school, we are always there for each other.

YOUR JUNIOR DECEMBER 2024 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--EZEQUIEL CARDOZO-AVILES! My family consists of my parents and siblings. Two of my siblings attend college while another is in middle school. I have liked all my classes even if some days are difficult but my favorite has been Chemistry. I like Chemistry because I have learned the subject well and don't struggle with it. I have multiple favorite teachers. Ms. Irmen teaches very well and engages with the class so no kid is struggling. Mr. Weber has funny jokes that make my day. He is also my coach in the fall. Mr. Tremblay is always encouraging us to do our best. He is a nice person and a great teacher. In the fall, I run cross country, while in the spring I run track. In my free time I listen to music, run, and play video games. After high school I would like to attend a college or trade school. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because of how encouraging the teachers to give us a bright future.

YOUR SOPHOMORE DECEMBER 2024 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--AIDEN WOLFORD! The people in my family are very hard workers and work long hours to provide for me and my brothers and I admire their work ethics and the amount of work they put into their jobs. My favorite class has been 4th hour AP Government. It's is a class I definitely recommend if you like history. It has a great teacher for it. It's a good class to learn about the government of your country. My favorite teacher has been Mr. Linderman. Being able to talk to him about the basketball season and be able to get the advice I need, makes me respect him and what he does. He also teaches history-- my favorite subject. I participate in 3 high school sports: football, basketball, and baseball. In my free time I like to spend time with my friends and play sports. After high school I would like to further my education at a 4 year university. I am proud to be a WHS student because this has been the school I have been to my entire life and they have always treated me well and have given me many memories i will never forget.

YOUR SOPHOMORE DECEMBER 2024 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--MAYCIE MEDLIN! My family consists of my mom, stepdad, and little sisters Mattie and Mickinley. I also have a brother, Rhett. My favorite class has been ceramics. I love ceramics because I love art and love to use my creative mind to bring things to life. Art is also one of my favorite hobbies. My favorite teacher is probably Mr. Andrews. He makes history class fun and interesting and he's just a really awesome teacher. This year I participated in my first year of cross country and plan to either do track or golf in the spring. In my free time I love to do art, go to the gym, shop, hunt, travel, and drive my car around. After high school, I don't know yet but I plan to travel a lot and move to Florida by the beach. I've also found a huge interest in photography. I'm proud to be a WHS Panther because the school provides great opportunities for me!

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR FRESHMEN DECEMBER 2024 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--ANNABELLA SCHADLER! I’ve four siblings, one older brother and three sisters. Two of them are the oldest and one of them is the youngest. I have two nephews who are one year old and I have another nephew coming this month. I live with my parents and my little sister. My favorite class has to be history because I love learning about the past and all of the cool stuff that happened before us. My favorite teacher is Mrs. Hunt because I love how she helps us with our art projects and she is a cool person to talk to. I was in cheerleading during football season but I might do it next year in 10th grade. During my free time, I usually just go to my room to watch my favorite shows like Outer Banks, Stranger Things, and Shameless or just make bracelets. The plans after high school are to move to North or South Carolina and try to get into a college there and then I’ll become a Marine Biologist. The reason why I’m proud of being a Panther is because all of the staff here are so nice and Watervliet is where I met all of my friends.

They are funny and kind parents who always encourage me to do my best! My favorite classes are art or spanish! I enjoy both of these things a lot and getting to do them in school is amazing! Art is one of my main hobbies! I like all of my teachers and try not to pick favorites! :) I am in winter cheer and science olympiad! :D In my free time I usually try to do some art or watch a show with my parents! If not that then I chill to some music or read a book! I plan on going to college! I'm not totally sure where yet but yes! I am proud to be a WHS Panther because all of the students and staff here are supportive of others and help each other out when its needed!

On Monday the JV Girls basketball team traveled to Dowagiac to take on the Chieftains. The JV Lady Panthers started off the game with an 8-4 first quarter lead propelled by their defense and transition offense. The team would go into half trailing 13-12. The Lady chieftains held the Lady panthers to 4 points in the 3rd as the Panthers went into the 4th qtr trailing 22-16. The Panthers would go on to complete a 4th qtr comeback fueled by Tough defense and unselfishness on offense closing the 4th quarter on a 12-4 run. The Lady Panthers fell to Bridgman last night. The Bees got off to a quick start, hitting three 3 point field goals in the first quarter and led, 14-4. Bridgman extended the lead to 15 with solid post play, leading 24-9 at the break. The second half proved to be a more competitive half as the Bees only outscored the Panthers, 19-15 in the final 16 minutes. Leading the Panthers on the offensive side tonight were Natalie Van Lente and Liela Liberto-Taylor both with 6 points and both with a pair of three-point field goals. Rounding out the scoring for the Panthers were Marissa Lowell 3, Courtney Van Lente 3, Addison Smith 2, Riley Preston 2, and Isabella Bultema 2. Exams are after break on January 14-17. If you have 3 or fewer absences and a B in a class or 5 or fewer absences and an A in a class, you are not required to take the exam.
