🪶 Indigenous Peoples’ Week
On Thursday wear orange to honor Indigenous children who were taken from their families and forced to attend residential boarding schools across the United States and Canada.
For many decades, Indigenous children were removed from their homes, their language and culture were taken away from them, and many of them never returned. Wearing orange is a way to remember those children, to support the healing of families and communities, and to say together:
Every child matters.
Every culture matters.
Every story matters.
So tomorrow, wear orange to show respect, awareness, and solidarity.
Let’s continue to learn, listen, and live in a good way this week, Panthers. 🧡🐾

Today at WHS, as part of Indigenous Peoples’ Week, many of our students and staff are wearing braids.

Braids hold deep meaning in many Indigenous cultures. They represent the mind, body, and spirit woven together, showing balance and unity. Braiding is often done with care, gentleness, and good thoughts, making it a way to honor one’s identity, culture, and connection to others.

Wearing braids today is a gesture of respect and solidarity — a way for us to learn together, acknowledge the living traditions of Indigenous peoples, and celebrate culture in a positive and meaningful way.

Mno Bmadzewen — living in a good way. 🪶❤️🖤🤍💛

At WHS, student leadership happens every single day — not just in big moments, but in the voices, choices, and courage of our students who step forward to lead our community. Today was a beautiful example of that. 💛

🎙️ Morning Announcements were led by senior Giovanni Ayala, who shared our daily message in both English and Spanish — honoring the languages and cultures represented in our school.

🎺 TAPS was performed with care and respect by Gianna Berry in honor of Veterans Day, reminding us of the power of gratitude and remembrance.

🪶 And as part of our Indigenous Peoples’ Week, shared the Word of the Day in the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi language, Lilliana Kirby teaching us how to greet one another in a way that honors the original people of this land.

These are the moments where Capturing Kids’ Hearts shines — where students share their voices, support one another, and help create a school culture rooted in respect, identity, and community.

We are so proud of these student leaders and grateful for the example they set. 🐾❤️

📸 See the photos attached — and join us in celebrating their leadership!

🌿 Indigenous Peoples’ Week at WHS — Day 1 🌿

Today, our students and staff began celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Week with the theme Mno Bmadzewen — which means “living in a good way.” This week is entirely student-led, and we are focusing on honoring the history, culture, and present-day lives of Indigenous peoples, especially the Potawatomi, whose land our community stands on today.

Word of the Day: Bozho
Pronounced BOO-shoo, Bozho means “Hello” in Potawatomi.

Dress-Up Focus:
We wore the Medicine Wheel colors — Yellow, White, Black, and Red.
The Medicine Wheel is a powerful symbol of balance:

Mind
Body
Spirit
Emotions

It reminds us to care for ourselves, each other, and the world around us — to move through life in a good way.

✨ The beautiful Medicine Wheel artwork shown below was created by WHS student Marley Alsup, who will also be performing a traditional jingle dress dance and round dance demonstration later this week. ✨

We are proud of our students for leading, teaching, and sharing this important celebration with our school community.
We are learning. We are honoring. We are still here. 🐾❤️

There is an SAC meeting on Wednesday at 7:30 AM in the media center –all student representatives should attend.
—--------------------------------------------------------------
This week we will celebrate Indigenous Peoples week at the high school.
Tuesday we ask students and staff to wear braids. For many Indigenous peoples, including the Potawatomi, hair holds deep cultural and spiritual meaning. Braiding hair is not just a style — it is a ceremony of care, identity, connection, and strength. A braid traditionally has three strands, and each strand reminds us of something important:
Mind

Body

Spirit
When braided together, they symbolize balance and wholeness — living in a good way.

A huge thank you to the teachers who nominated these students and to the families who joined us this morning. We are so proud of our Panthers! 🌟✨

🏅 Sports Update
Volleyball:
The Lady Panthers secured their spot in the District Championship with a convincing sweep over the Gobles Tigers in the semifinal match, with scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-19. The Panthers demonstrated control from the first serve, never allowing Gobles to dictate the pace of the match. The victory is a clear indicator that the hard work and competitive fire the team has fostered in practice is translating directly to postseason success.
Serving and Defense: Kelsie Gaston and Addison Smith led the team in serving, each delivering three aces. Gaston also anchored the back row, racking up 12 digs to keep rallies alive. On the attack, Ava Hobson achieved a perfect night with 6 kills on 6 attempts. Isabella Bultema commanded the net, leading the team in blocks and aggressively challenging the Gobles offense to maintain Watervliet’s defensive wall. The entire squad's commitment to pushing each other daily in practice has clearly forged a resilient and cohesive unit ready for the final challenge of the district tournament. The District Championship will be played Friday at Bangor starting at 5:30 PM vs Bangor.

Next week at WHS, our students are leading Indigenous Peoples Week with the theme Mno Bmadzewen — “Living in a Good Way.” 💛
We are learning about and honoring the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, whose land our community is connected to.

Each day includes a Potawatomi word of the day, a chance to learn and unlearn, and a meaningful dress-up theme to build understanding — not costumes, but colors, care, and community.

On Friday, we are honored to welcome Marley Alsup and her father for a cultural dance demonstration, including a Jingle Dress Dance and Woodland Dance, followed by a Round Dance for students who would like to join.

This week is entirely student-led, and we are so proud of their leadership, respect, and commitment to learning in a good way. 🪶❤️

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR JUNIOR OCTOBER 2025 STUDENT OF THE MONTH JOELLE PETZNICK!
My closest family includes my mom, my sister Charley, and I also include my cat, Nova. My favorite teacher at the school has to be Mr. Linderman. He has taught me every school year, and I am always excited for his classes. He's very encouraging and thoughtful, encouraging me to share my thoughts and opinions, and always very engaging with his lessons. My favorite class is between AP US History or SAT Prep. They're both very fun classes to me, I love history, but SAT prep helps me significantly and I've already seen a rise in my SAT practice scores. No sports or clubs, but I like to volunteer at the Humane Soicety. After highschool I plan to aim for Univeristy of Michigan, but if not, I would be perfectly fine going to MSU or maybe Western. I want to follow a career in law and become an attorney. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because I feel the school appreciates me for who I am. Teachers are extremely supportive and I am motivated to work harder than before.

Día de muertos
Our Spanish classes spent last week learning about Día de Muertos and celebrating cultural awareness by creating an ofrenda in our classroom. An ofrenda is a place to honor and remember loved ones who have passed by including items that bring back happy memories.

Students learned that ofrendas often include photos, favorite foods, or special mementos that represent the person being remembered. Several students contributed by sending in pictures, bringing meaningful items, or sharing memories of their family members. For those without photos, students wrote names and heartfelt messages to their loved ones.

The main takeaway from our lesson was a beautiful one: to smile and remember the happy moments, keeping our loved ones close through joyful memories.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR JUNIOR OCTOBER 2025 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--TRENT GEIKE!
I live with my mom, stepdad, and my two grandparents. My favorite teachers are Mr. Dennison and Mr. Andrews. My favorite class is woodshop because I can work at my own pace and build projects that challenge me. I’m not currently in any sports or clubs, but I played baseball and wrestled in middle school. In my free time, I like to listen to music and play video games. After high school, I plan to get a job and attend a trade school or college that offers construction trades, and then join a carpentry union. I’m proud to be a Watervliet student because I have access to an education that not everyone gets the opportunity to have.
