YOUR SOPHOMORE MAY 2024 Student of the Month --JACOB SHUNKWILER! My mom is an occupational therapist at Corewell Health Hospital in St. Joe and my dad is a maintenance worker at the same hospital which help me throughout high school. My sister Ella goes to college at Lake Michigan College and my other sister is going to GVSU. Since I don't have one favorite class I will talk about my two favorite classes. One of my favorite class is history with Mr. Andrews. I like this class because history has always been one of my favorite classes forever and I really just enjoy learning about the history of the United States and all around the world. My other favorite class is Biology with Mrs.O'Toole. I like this class because it is always easy for me to understand topics like Ecology and Evolution. My Favorite teacher is Mr. Andrews. He is my favorite teacher because during History he is very straight forward with the lessons and doesn't get sidetracked, which I really appreciate because it allows me to better understand the topics and get things done. He is also very nice to each and everyone of the students in my class, which creates a great and relaxed atmosphere in the class. At Watervliet I participate in varsity soccer, but have recently branched out to the St.Joe Kickers club and do an outdoor team as well as indoor there. Something I like to do in my free time is spend time with my family whether that be just at my house watching a movie with them or going on a walk with them. Another thing I like to do in my free time is go swimming at forest beach during the summer. I also really like to go and practice soccer with my friends at the high school field. After high school I am planning on finishing out my 5th year for the EMC and getting my associates. After that I plan to move on to a 4 year college like Ferris or GVSU. After that I plan to either work as a Financial Advisor or a Teacher. I am proud to be a Panther because I am able to follow in my grandpa's footprints as a Watervliet Panther.

Anyone interested in running cross country next fall needs to sign-up in either Mr. Weber’s room, Mr. Grear’s room, or the high school office. The deadline for the 3 and a B and the 5 and an A attendance incentive is June 3rd. If you need to know the status of your current attendance, email Ms. Powers. If you are receiving an award, you will receive a letter in the mail. Show any teacher and completely cleaned-out locker with no stickers or tash and receive a ticket that can be redeemed in the office for a treat this week. All students: You will turn your chrome book and charger into your 4th hour teacher after you have taken all of your exams. If you do not turn these items in before you leave fir the summer, you will be fined. Summer school starts June 16th. Bring your enrollment form back to Mrs. Dawson ASAP. There are limited spots. YOUR MAY 2024 JUNIOR Student of the Month--DANIEL MANDUJANO! I live with my two parents, Alicia and Juan, and have an older sister, Brici, who has two little ones, and an older brother, Juan. My favorite class is Algebra 2 because I've felt like I've been naturally good at math, and it's a class that I do find enjoyment in. With that my favorite teacher is Mrs. Sibley. I've had her since my sophomore year, and she always does a great job at making sure you understand the current lesson; never letting outside things affect the way she teaches. I'm currently in my junior track season and in the fall I run cross country. In my free time, I like to just lie in my bed and watch YouTube or play video games. After high school I plan to go to a 4 year university to pursue a career in the medical field. I am proud to be a WHS Panther. I've been going to Watervliet ever since Young 5s and have always felt that I've been given big opportunities to set me up for my future after high school by being able to take college courses and a good variety of APs, which have helped set me up for a transition to college.

YOUR MAY 2024 SOPHOMORE Student of the Month--JULIAN CARDOSO! Hello, my name is Julian Cardoso. I am currently attending Watervliet High School, the Math & Science Center, and participating in dual enrollment. I reside with my mother and my three brothers—two younger and one older. One of my older brother is currently in university grinding it out. My mother is an incredible person who does everything she can for my siblings and me. My family is always supporting each other through any difficulties. My mother’s dedication and care inspire me to strive for excellence in everything I do. At my high school, my favorite class is U.S. History. I appreciate this class because there is always something different and engaging to do every day. My favorite project in this class was creating a magazine, and I was very pleased with how it turned out due to the effort I invested. Furthermore at the Math & Science Center, my favorite class is Analytical Chemistry because of the enjoyable and interesting labs we conduct each week. These hands-on experiments make learning both enjoyable and memorable. My favorite teacher is Mrs. Uhm, who teaches AH Pre-Calculus at the Math & Science Center. She distinguishes herself by not merely teaching us formulas but also explaining the deeper meaning and reasoning behind their use. Her teaching style has greatly enhanced my understanding and appreciation of mathematics. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my mother and ensuring that I complete all my schoolwork promptly—discipline and consistency are key for me. I also love to draw and sketch out ideas for future passion projects. Additionally, I dedicate a significant amount of time to researching topics that interest me, keeping myself informed and inspired. After high school, I plan to attend university and subsequently graduate school to earn a PhD. I am considering double majoring in Physics and Applied Mathematics to broaden my knowledge and skills. Alongside my studies, I aim to have multiple side ventures and ultimately make a positive impact on the world, especially when it involves advancing our modern tech to the next level. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because our school offers a ton of opportunities most of other schools don’t offer. We have access to LMC classes, dual enrollment, AP courses (even online), various online courses, and options to test out of courses. Always ask questions if the school offers something, because you never know what you could find out. Additionally, there is a wide variety of sports to participate in if a student would like. These opportunities allow us to tailor our education to our interests and goals, making it a great environment for academic and personal growth for every student in the building. All you need is the effort to make it happen.

YOUR MAY 2024 FRESHMAN Student of the Month--AJ HOLMES! I live with my dad and my brother. My favorite classes and teachers are Mr. Tremblay and Mr. Linderman. The sport that I was doing was Track and Field. In Track, I was Pole Vaulting and running short and long-distance races. What I like to do in my free time is build stuff, and help people in my neighborhood with lawn work. What I plan to do after high school is to go to the military. I'm thinking about serving time in the Army and to serve more time in the Air Force.

CONGRATULATIONS TREVOR!!

Students in Art I recently completed one of our most challenging projects. The assignment began with learning about artists renowned for their botanical paintings, such as Georgia O'Keeffe, John James Audubon, and Marimekko. Students then created observational drawings of live plants, focusing on studying the details and accurately reproducing them in their drawings. Following this, we spent time experimenting with and learning how to work with watercolor before beginning the final pieces. Meanwhile, students in Art II and the sculpture class are working on independent projects. This period allows them to explore materials they have learned about and enjoyed or to try something new. The goal is to challenge themselves and demonstrate their artistic skills. Current projects range from tile mosaics to ink drawings to dyed fabric batiks.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR SENIOR MAY 2024 Student of the Month--ELLA HARRIS! I live with my two amazing parents, Chad and Angie Harris, and my spectacular sister, Sienna. They are all super loving and supporting and I am so happy to have them in my life. My favorite teacher is Mrs Brush because she is such an amazing teacher and person. I always feel welcome in her classroom. She is fun and wants every one of her students to grow. She helped me become a better performer and a better person. My favorite class would be a tie between Choir and Yearbook. Everyone in both classes treats each other like family. Singing is one of my passions and I love to do it every day with people who also love to sing. In yearbook, I get to use my creativity and design skills to create a yearbook capturing this school year! At school, I am the president of the Concert choir, president of the student council, an announcement reader, and a member of the Watervliet High School National Honor Society. I played 3 Varsity sports: Varsity football cheer, Varsity basketball cheer, and Varsity girls soccer. When I am not participating in school activities; I love to sing, play my guitar, draw, paint with watercolors, hang out with my friends, and perform in theatre productions. (I am involved in around 4 or 5 every year!) After high school, I will be attending Lake Michigan College to obtain an associate's degree in Musical Theatre. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because there are so many amazing students and staff here. I have met so many encouraging people during my four years here. I have also been able to get ahead in my college career here through dual enrollment classes. Not many schools offer this many college courses, so I am very happy I got to participate in them.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR SENIOR MAY 2024 Student of the Month--TREVOR TAVOLACCI! The members of my family: I have a soon to be high school freshmen brother, His name is Deven. My Dad is an electrician through IBID County Electric, and My Mom is an administrative assistant at Lane Automotive. My favorite teacher has been Mrs. Brush. She has always been my favorite teacher. She made me excited to learn our new pieces and about music. She is a very kind and determined person, who pushes all her students to do their best. My favorite classes have been Choir and Art. I love music and art, so being in classes where I can sing and draw I really enjoyed. But throughout my high school career, I have enjoyed every single one of my classes. The club/sport that I am involved in is Esports. I do many things in my free time. I play video games, draw, paint, mow the lawn, build LEGOs, hang out with family or friends, and many other things. I plan to attend LMC after high school. I am going to LMC to major in Information Technology - Networking. After LMC, I then plan to transfer to a 4 year college and finish my degree. I am proud to be a panther, because I wouldn't be where I am today, if I never went to Watervliet.
